Peter King Worries About Possible 'Precedent' Set by GOP Letter to Iran

Rep. Peter King of New York said this week that he disapproves of the letter 47 fellow Republicans sent to Iranian leaders regarding the White House's recent negotiations on nuclear development.

While he agreed with "the entire tone of the letter," the House member said he does "believe in a strong presidency" and worried about the "precedent" that could be set by Monday's congressional interference in foreign negotiations.

"I don't know if I would have signed the letter," King said Tuesday during an International Association of Fire Fighters forum, according to The Huffington Post. "I don't trust the president on this, quite frankly, though I don't know if I'd go public with it to a foreign government."

The Obama administration and five other countries have been negotiating with Iran in recent months, offering to lift economic sanctions if the country agrees to curb its nuclear enrichment program.

The letter sent to Iranian leaders by 47 of the Senate's 54 Republican members sought to remind the country that any deal that rises to the level of a treaty would have to be ratified by both houses of the U.S. Congress, as per the terms set out by the U.S. Constitution.

The letter comes one week after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke to a joint session of Congress about the dangers of Iran obtaining a nuclear bomb. Congress extended the invitation without the White House's knowledge, which provoked disapproval from the president.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden both denounced the Senate letter on Monday.

"This letter sends a highly misleading signal to friend and foe alike that that our Commander-in-Chief cannot deliver on America’s commitments — message that is as false as it is dangerous," Biden wrote in a statement.
