Two massive pileups in Pennsylvania due to icy conditions included more than 100 vehicles and closed the eastbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Philadelphia.

CBS Philadelphia reported one pileup, which included about 75 cars and several tractor-trailers, happened at around 8 a.m. near the Route 1 exits in Bensalem. A second crash, closer to the Route 1 exit, involved approximately another 30 vehicles.

Helicopter footage of the crash site showed a messy scene of jack-knifed tractor-trailers and rescue workers trying to free trapped motorists from cars wedged under trucks.

Early reports from the scene indicated that many of the injuries were minor, Turnpike spokesman Bill Capone told ABC affiliate WPVI-TV.

At least 30 injuries were reported as of noon, though none were believed to be serious.

"The word that we have is that we may have seen the most severely injured at this point in time, which we're pleased to say did not include any life-threatening injuries that we are aware of," Dr. John Kelly, chief of staff at Abington Memorial Hospital, told CBS News.

The latest snowstorm to hit the United States arrived Wednesday, and left thousands without electricity across the South, and also gripped Northeastern cities including Philadelphia and New York. (https://www.newsmax.com/US/winter-storm-atlanta-traffic/2014/02/12/id/552386)
