A Pennsylvania cop shot seven times last week while on duty was released from a hospital Monday afternoon after two surgeries, reported WTXF-TV.

Folcroft Police Officer Christopher Dorman, 25, was shot in the face, leg, and groin while approaching an apartment complex Friday morning where a group of people reportedly were smoking marijuana and dealing drugs.

WPVI-TV said Dorman confronted a suspect identified as Donte Island, 33, who allegedly shot the rookie police officer. Authorities said Dorman was wearing his protective vest at the time.

Police said Island fired at a second officer but missed, noted WPVI-TV.

Dorman was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center by a helicopter.

"I'd like to say 'Thank you' to everybody for being there for me and my family – and my fellow brothers in blue for this," Dorman said at the Folcroft Fire Co. fire house Monday after he was released from the hospital, per WPVI-TV. "And everybody's supporting me a lot, and I really appreciate it."

Confusion about Dorman's condition arose Saturday night during a concert by country music star Kenny Chesney, reported WCAU-TV. Dorman's condition improved from critical to stable condition on Saturday, but Chesney mistakenly told fans the officer had died in the hospital.

Chesney called Dorman at the hospital on Sunday to apologize and invited him to a future Philadelphia Eagles game.

Folcroft Police Chief Robert Ruskowski told WTXF-TV that Dorman was a Folcroft native and also had served as a volunteer firefighter in the town. The chief told the television station that Dorman joined the force about a year ago.

Delaware County district attorney Jack Whelan told WTXF-TV that his office will "aggressively prosecute" Island, who has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and aggravated assault.
