During a 7-hour-long spacewalk, Peggy Whitson set two new spacewalking records for female astronauts all over the world.

During her record-breaking eighth spacewalk, the most for any female astronaut, Whitson and fellow NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough spent 7 hours and 4 minutes completing a list of tasks outside the International Space Station. Adding that time, Whitson has accumulated 53 hours and 22 minutes of spacewalk time, blasting past Suni Williams’ previous record of 50 hours and 40 minutes, according to Space.com.

Whitson and Kimbrough worked on getting the space station ready for commercial aircraft to dock there, reconnecting cables on the Pressurized Mating Adapter 3 (PMA-3) they had disconnected last week to move it, and removing then installing thermal covers on the PMA-3 and other equipment to shield them from heat damage, according to USA Today.

They even had to do some troubleshooting when one of the thermal covers they were installing got loose and floated into space. With some quick thinking and help from the Johnson Space Center, the pair used a cover they had removed earlier and clamped it onto the spot where the lost one would have been installed. The mission was a success, and all of their objectives were met, USA Today reported.

Whitson is the fifth most experienced spacewalker of all time right now, but is expected to move up to third after another planned space walk on April 6 after more equipment arrives, according to CBS News.

Cosmonaut Anatoly Solovyev and former astronaut Mike Lopez-Alegria are first and second on the list, with 68 and 67 hours of spacewalking respectively.
