Paulina Vega, the reigning Miss Universe, has refused to give up her crown despite publicly condemning Donald Trump's immigration comments, prompting the GOP presidential hopeful to strike back and call her a hypocrite.

During his presidential announcement last month, Trump made strong comments on illegal immigration, claiming that Mexican immigrants in the U.S. have brought drugs, crime, and rape with them.

Last week, Vega, who is Colombian, joined the countless others who have spoken out against Trump's comments. The scheduled co-hosts of this year's Miss USA pageant have dropped out, and NBC, Univision, Macy's have even cut ties with the real estate mogul who owns the Miss Universe organization along with NBCUniversal. Vega first posted her Trump opposition to Instagram Thursday:

PAULINA VEGA MISS UNIVERSE 2014 STATEMENT I find Mr. Trump’s comments unjust and hurtful. As a Colombian and as Miss Universe, I want to show my support and validate the sentiments of the Latin community. The Miss Universe Organization works independently from its owners. For the past 64 years, they have created partnerships with great charity groups and have helped thousands of communities. Their legacy of uniting countries from around the world has been inspiring to many. If the Miss Universe Organization shared any anti-Latin sentiments or any type of racial biases, I wouldn’t be in this position today. I strongly believe that dividing and categorizing humankind only holds it back. Acknowledging and embracing the differences that exist across humanity is the first step in real and substantial development. We must strive together in order to improve the common good.

Trump responded to the 22-year-old’s position just three days later on Twitter:

But Trump’s accusation that Vega is a “hypocrite” has not seemed to faze the beauty queen. She said that she would still continue to associate with the pageant that existed before Trump and "will continue to exist if he stops being its owner someday,” according to The Associated Press.

“The fact that I am not giving up my crown doesn't mean that I am changing my stance about everything I said," Vega said. "It doesn't make any sense that Donald Trump calls me a hypocrite because I'm not giving up my crown . . . I have kept doing my job as Miss Universe all these days. The work continues as always despite all this craziness going on.”

However, pressure continues to build up against the pageant winner to relinquish her crown. Colombia has refused to host the event and Mexico announced it will not be sending any contestants. Shakira, the Colombian singer, tweeted in reference to Trump that “no one living in this century should stand behind so much ignorance.”

Vega says she supports those speaking out against Trump.

“I totally respect them. Everyone acted as they deemed proper in this situation to demonstrate their support to Latin America. I support them all; they took the right decision. If they don’t want to work with certain types of people, they have the right not to,” she told Latina.com.
