Paul Bhattacharjee, a long-time British television and stage actor who appeared in James Bond's "Casino Royale," was found dead near cliffs at Splash Point in East Sussex, England.

The 53-year-old actor was said to be in good spirits on the evening of July 10, but after sending his girlfriend a text message at 9 p.m. local time no one heard from Paul Bhattacharjee and he was reported missing, the Daily Mail reported.

Witnesses said Bhattacharjee was seen leaving rehearsals at the Royal Court Theatre in Sloane Square in London on July 10 and appeared to walk in the direction of a nearby subway station. People magazine reported he was preparing to star in the play "Talk Show."

Sussex authorities found Bhattacharjee's body July 12 at Splash Point and later informed Scotland Yard. Bhattacharjee was not formally identified and next of kin notified until Thursday, according to the Daily Mail. The case remained under investigation.

His son Rahul Bhattacharjee-Prashar, 24, told the London Evening Standard that his father's disappearance was "completely out of character."

"He was doing well in his career and everything seemed to be going okay," Bhattacharjee-Prashar said. "I just don’t know what has happened."

Meera Syal, who appeared with Bhattacharjee in the Royal Shakespeare Company production of "Much Ado about Nothing," told the Daily Mail that Bhattacharjee was "gifted, versatile and generous but also complex, deep thinking, engagingly opinionated and politically committed as a personality, truly wonderful to share a stage with."

"I don't think any of us who saw him recently or were working with him had any idea this awful tragedy was going to happen. We are all sending our love and prayers to his family and partner," said Syal.
