Paris’ “love locks” are being removed from the Pont des Arts after officials worried about the weight of the padlocks that tourists often attach to the bridge to symbolize their relationships.

Visitors customarily attach locks with engraved or written messages to the bridge and sometimes — for good measure — toss the keys into the Seine River below, according to CNN. The practice, which has spread to other landmarks as well, reportedly began in 2006, inspired by an Italian young-adult novel.

But Lisa Anselmo, co-founder of No Love Locks, told CNN the trinkets began causing problems in 2012.

Under the weight of more than 700,000 locks, weighing roughly the same as 20 elephants, the bridge is crumbling.

According to the Paris City Council, the locks create two issues: “Degradation of property heritage and a risk to the safety of visitors, Parisians, and tourists," according to CNN.

Additionally, graffiti, pickpockets, and vendors selling cheap locks have cluttered the famous boardwalk.

“Paris had to do something to save their heritage sites,” Anselmo told CNN. “The entire UNESCO World Heritage district is endangered by love locks.”

A program launched in August 2014 sought to end the custom, and requested that visitors take selfies on the bridge instead of placing locks. The initiative, however, was unsuccessful.

In February, wooden panels were put up to cover the bridge’s sides for Valentine’s Day.

But now, the city has been successful in its bid to remove the love locks. From June 1 to June 8, the promenade will be closed as the locks are removed.

According to The New York Times, some of the grills full of locks may be used as art pieces in the future, but nothing is certain.

Twitter users expressed their disappointment of the locks being removed:
