Paris Hilton broke the no selfie rule imposed on red carpet walkers at the Cannes International Film Festival Monday night, while other celebrities criticized rules about what kind of shoes women can and cannot wear.

According to The Independent U.K., festival director Thierry Fremaux said that both selfies and flat shoes for women were banned this year.

"We are waging a campaign to slow down the contemporary practice of selfies on the red carpet and the steps," said the Frenchman. "Beyond what we think, it’s a practice that’s often extremely ridiculous and grotesque."

Despite, or perhaps because of, Fremaux's finger wagging, Hilton and actor Sun Zu Yang snapped at least one selfie while standing on both the red carpet and the steps on their way to the premiere of "Inside Out."

Elsewhere in the festival, multiple reports sprang up saying that security was stopping women who weren't wearing high heels from entering the red carpet — a draconian interpretation of the festivals rules about formal dress for both men and women.

Actress Emily Blunt said it was "very disappointing" to hear that women were being forced into high heels.

"Everyone should wear flats, to be honest," she said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "We shouldn’t wear high heels anyway, that’s my point of view. You kind of think that there’s these new waves of equality and waves of people realizing that women are just as fascinating and interesting to watch, and bankable."

Fremaux denied that security guards had been instructed to enforce a high-heels rule, saying that "The rumor that the festival requires high heels for women on the steps in unfounded."

Nonetheless, "Sicario" director Denis Villeneuve said that he and actors Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin "will walk the steps in high heels" in protest of "flatgate."
