A lost Disney short film featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, the first character created in 1927 by Walt Disney and the predecessor to Mickey Mouse, has been discovered by a researcher exploring the British Film Institute National Archive.

The six-minute animated film "Sleigh Bells" was thought to be lost until the researcher found it in online archives; other films featuring Oswald survive, according to a film archive release

Walt Disney Animation Studios restored the film and it will premiere at BFI Southbank in London in December.

"What a joyful treat to discover a long-lost Walt Disney film in the BFI National Archive and to be able to show 'Sleigh Bells' to a whole new audience 87 years after it was made," said Robin Baker, the head curator of the BFI National Archive. "The restoration of this film will introduce many audiences to Disney’s work in the silent period – it clearly demonstrates the vitality and imagination of his animation at a key point in his early career."

Andrew Millstein, president of Walt Disney Animation Studios, said he appreciated the opportunity to work with BFI to restore the film.

"The Oswald shorts are an important part of our Studios’ history, and we have been working with film archives and private collectors all around the world to research the missing titles," he said.

Oswald the Rabbit is the predecessor of Mickey Mouse, and it's easy in the short to see some likenesses between the two.

Oswald was the creation of Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks for Universal Studios, BFI said; the two created Mickey Mouse after leaving Universal over a contract dispute.

A DVD of Oswald's antics that weren't lost, "The Adventures of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit," is available from Disney, according to a company blog
