A plane crash and fire in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, killed a Kentucky pilot Thursday and a passenger is in critical condition after the attempted landing during AirVenture, a convention for the Experimental Aircraft Association.

"It’s always tragic when an accident occurs. We always feel for those involved and for their families," EAA spokesperson Dick Knapinski told Fox 11 after the Oshkosh crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the pilot was trying to land at the Wittman Regional Airport but the plane bounced and landed among several trucks. Smoke and flames were immediately apparent.

“They’re here, exhibiting on the field and their people are right here. So we have the opportunity to have them immediately on the site and they can come out and begin the investigation,” Knapinski told Fox 11, and added that this is the first accident on EAA grounds during the AirVenture convention in three years.

The plane was a Breezy, which Fox 11 described as a “small, open aircraft.”

The pilot was reported to be 74 years old, USA Today said. His name has not been released. The passenger, who was at an area hospital, is a woman.

A day earlier, two people survived a plane crash near Oshkosh, both sustaining injuries that were not life-threatening.

That crash occurred near a small air strip next to a campground. Two brothers from Kentucky were landing when they lost power in their home-built airplane, a fire department spokesperson told Fox 11.

The men were reportedly in town attending the AirVenture event.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate both crashes. Of the Wednesday crash, NTSB’s Ed Malinowski told Fox 11 that they would be looking at the pilot, the weather, and the aircraft to determine what happened.
