Oscar Isaac and Catherine Keener have been cast to star in a new HBO miniseries based on the book "Show Me a Hero" and will explore the complexities of American race relations.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Isaac will play the lead role of Nick Wasicsko, the youngest mayor in the U.S. who is court-ordered to build low-income housing in a white neighborhood in his city. Catherine Keener will play a homeowner who is part of the housing controversy that creates a divide in the community and ends the mayor’s political career.

The show is based on Lisa Belkin’s 1999 book that looks at how the housing controversy and race relations were dealt with by local officials and residents of the Yonkers, New York, community. "Show Me a Hero" is expected to air on HBO in 2016.

Belkin covered the turmoil in Yonkers as a reporter for The New York Times in the late 1980s when a federal court ordered the building of the low-income housing. The book “follows the housing battle through the eyes of its participants: fearful white residents of the east side; black public housing tenants anxious to escape the misery of the west-side projects,” according to Publishers Weekly.

After the turmoil that followed the court order, Wasicsko ended up committing suicide in October of 1993.

Paul Haggis, who directed, “Crash,” released in 2004, will direct “Show Me a Hero.” David Simon and William Zorzi will write the script and be executive producers of the six-hour miniseries, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Simon was nominated for several Emmys for HBO’s “The Wire,” “Generation Kill,” and “The Corner.”

Isaac stars in the upcoming “Star Wars: Episode VII” as a “a descendant or even the son of (Harrison) Ford’s Han Solo character,” according to New York Post's Page Six.

Page Six also reported that Isaac’s role in “Star Wars” will likely be expanded given that Ford broke his leg during the filming of the movie in June.

Keener played Captain Richard Phillips’ wife Andrea in "Captain Phillips," released in 2013. She was nominated for Academy Awards for her roles in both "Being John Malkovich" (1999) and "Capote" (2005).
