Oregon, Ohio Renamed Ahead of College Football Final Against Ducks

Oregon, Ohio, has been renamed, at least until after Monday's college football national championship game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Oregon Ducks.

The suburban Toledo town, wanting to show its allegiance to the Buckeyes, used a proclamation to change its name to this mouthful: "Oregon, Ohio Buckeyes on the Bay, City of Duck Hunters."

"Whereas, the City of Oregon officially adopted its name in 1838 as Oregon Township which happens to be 21 years before the State of Oregon received its statehood in 1859. And The City of Oregon has been petitioned by residents of the city to make it clear that we are not associated with Oregon University Ducks Football," the proclamation states.

The idea for the name change was cooked up a day after Ohio State upset Alabama in the Sugar Bowl on Thursday, advancing the Buckeyes to the championship game against Oregon, which defeated defending national champion Florida State the same day.

Oregon, Ohio, natives Matt Squibb and Mark Rabbitt are the ones who created a Change.org petition asking the city to change its name to support Ohio State.

"I grew up in Oregon, Ohio, and love the city, but for the day of the 'Big Game' I am asking the city council to make a proclamation to change the name of the city for one day," Squibb wrote on the Change.org petition. "Call it Buckeye Town, Ohio City, Brutusville, whatever, you get the point. Let's not leave anything to chance here! Change the name and support the Buckeyes!"

Oregon Mayor Mike Seferian said that, while the city is having a good time with the proclamation and the game, he's had to be sensitive because the city is near an Ohio-Michigan border town — meaning there are a significant number of fans from the University of Michigan, Ohio State's arch rival, living in Oregon as well.

"We're having a lot of fun with (the name change)," Seferian told the Toledo Blade. "We've got some very dedicated sports fans."
