Online Chase Customers Find Account Balances Reduced to Zero

By    |   Wednesday, 20 Mar 2013 09:33 AM

Millions of Chase Bank customers across the U.S. who use online and mobile banking were shocked to see a zero balance on their accounts Monday and thought they'd been hacked, but Chase says it was a technical glitch that caused the error.

The bank did not disclose what the exact problem was or how many customers were affected, but the problem only lasted a few hours and was resolved by Monday evening.

"We have a technology problem regarding customers' balance information," Chase said in a statement. "It has nothing to do with cyber threats. It is an internal issue. We are very sorry to our customers for the inconvenience. This began earlier this evening. It is not confined to the West Coast."

Customers who saw a zero balance on their accounts immediately hopped on social media to vent about the issue.

Some initially worried that Chase had become the latest victim in a string of hacking incidents targeting U.S. banks. The recent DDoS attacks — distributed denial of service — are led by a group calling itself "Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Cyber Fighters" and cause a disruption of online and mobile banking services for long periods of time.
