The elevators at One World Trade Center serve as the perfect vantage point for a new time-lapse video giving viewers a virtual history lesson on New York.

The 47-second ride to the One World Trade Center observatory, which officially opens May 29, is captured in a neat time-lapse clip posted by The New York Times this week. It includes the Twin Towers because one cannot take in the history of downtown NYC without them, David W. Checketts, chairman and chief executive of Legends Hospitality, told The Times.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey selected Legends Hospitality to operate the three-level observatory in 2013.

"The event is certainly a key part of history," Checketts told the newspaper. "We did not think you could ignore it. Having it appear in the year it did and disappear in the year it did was the respectful way of addressing the fact that it was part of the landscape."

Checketts said there was plenty of debate within his company about using the image of the Twin Towers. The Port Authority and developers of the new tower, the Durst Organization, also weighed in.

"There were strong opinions and emotional reactions all around," he acknowledged.

The elevator video begins showing the marshland that dominated Manhattan during the 16th century, according to the New York Daily News. It then speeds through time to the city's early settlements to the its first landmark buildings in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Twin Towers can be seen about four seconds near the end of the video before they dissolve.

According to Bustle.com, the observatory its second only to Chicago's Willis Tower observatory as the tallest in the country at 1,268 feet. The elevator travels at 23 miles per hour, bringing visitors from the ground to the observatory.
