An Australian sheep dog thought to be the world’s oldest dog died this week at age 30.

The BBC reported that Maggie, a Kelpie owned by dairy farmer Brian McLaren of Victoria, Australia, died in her bed on Sunday night.

“She was still going along nicely last week," McLaren told The Weekly Times. “She was walking from the dairy to the office and growling at the cats and all that sort of thing. She just went downhill in two days … I’m sad, but I’m pleased she went the way she went.”

Maggie’s age can’t be confirmed, as McLaren said he lost her papers when she was a puppy. But he said his 34-year-old son was 4 when Maggie joined the family.

The official record holder for world’s oldest dog is also from Victoria, the BBC noted. That dog, an Australian Cattle Dog named Bluey, died in 1939 at age 29.

McLaren told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that Maggie spent her life rounding up cows, greeting kids from the school, drinking milk, and chasing his motorbike.

"She wasn't pampered but she was well looked after,” he said.

He said he was pleased that she died peacefully curled up in her bed because it would have broken his heart to put her down.

Australian Kelpies are medium-sized dogs weighing 31 to 46 pounds, with an average lifespan of 10 to 13 years, according to VetStreet.com.

Twitter users bid Maggie a fond farewell.
