A reportedly blood-stained knife found years ago at O.J. Simpson's now-demolished estate is now being tested by the Los Angeles Police Department for any connection with the infamous murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Roland Goldman in 1995.

TMZ reported that the knife, a folding buck knife, was found by a construction worker buried on the Simpson property either several years ago or in 1998, when the house was demolished.

The construction worker reportedly carried the knife out onto the street, and saw an off-duty LAPD cop who worked in the traffic division working security for a movie shoot.

"Our sources say the officer took the knife home and kept it," TMZ reportd.

"In late January of this year, after the cop retired from the LAPD, he contacted a friend who worked in LAPD's Robbery Homicide Division (RHD). The cop told the friend about the knife and said he was getting it framed to put on his wall. He wanted his friend to get the DR (Departmental Record) number for the Nicole Brown Simpson/Ronald Goldman murder case, which he planned on engraving in the frame."

When the higher-ups at the LAPD heard about this, they demanded the knife be turned over for DNA testing, and it was.

As The San Francisco Chronicle reported, Simpson, a retired football player, was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Roland Goldman in 1995. As per laws against double jeopardy, it is unlikely that Simpson could be tried again.

"Finding the knife that killed the two had been an obsession of police and others in the wake of the 1994 murders. Authorities searched for the murder weapon for months after the slayings, and there have been many leads that went cold," wrote the Los Angeles Times.

"But the defense produced the knife — in an envelope that became known as the 'mystery envelope' in the preliminary hearing. Forensic tests later revealed that the knife was in pristine condition, with no scratches or bloodstains to suggest it had been used in the vicious June 12, 1994, double homicide."

Additionally, a woman discovered in 1994 a red-stained knife a block from Simpson's home.

Simpson is currently serving nine to 33 years in prison for a 2008 kidnapping and armed robbery conviction.
