Personal information about inmates of one Ohio prison, including Social Security numbers, was mistakenly released to a convicted identity thief after a public records request he made.

Lonny Bristow, 43, routinely made public records requests to get access to prison rosters, the Mansfield News Journal reported. Though he never served time at Chillicothe Correctional Institution, which released the Social Security numbers, Bristow was released from jail in January after serving time for making bomb threats to courthouses in five states in 2012.

Bristow was surprised to get the personal information, which is supposed to be redacted under Ohio law, in his email. He thought he was being set up by authorities and decided to contact the media about what he received.

“I find it ironic they released this information to a former identity thief,” Bristow told the Mansfield News Journal. “I knew I had to turn it in to the media. I actually am truly done with the criminal life. Life’s too short. I could’ve used those Social Security numbers to open a credit card account, but I didn’t.”

Prison spokeswoman JoEllen Smith said the Department of Corrections is investigating the possibility of getting identity theft monitoring for inmates whose information was stolen, U.S. News & World Report said.

Bristow had formerly been labeled a “vexatious litigator” for filing at least 137 lawsuits against law enforcement, judges, media outlets, and others, according to the News Journal. Even though the suits didn’t amount to anything, they caused his defendants to rack up thousands in legal fees before being thrown out of court.
