4 Officers Hit by Car at Ferguson-Garner Protest in Denver; 1 Critical

Four Denver police officers were hit and injured, one critically, by a car Wednesday at a high school protest over the Ferguson and New York City grand jury decisions.

The police officers were on bicycles, escorting high school students during a Wednesday march that began as a small high school protest but grew to more than 1,000 people, the Denver Post reported.

The driver of a black Mercedes gunned the engine and drove into a crowd of people that included the four police officers, and reports are saying the man in his late 40s had a medical problem right before the incident, the Post said.

Officer John Adsit was critically injured and underwent hours of surgery; although he’s “not out of the woods,” police told the Post that he was stable. KKTV reported that he faced more surgeries on Thursday. The other three officers injured were treated and released.

Many of the student protesters were crying, even hours after the incident, the Post said. A woman in nurse’s scrubs on the scene “was covered to her knees in blood after apparently coming to the aid of the injured cops,” the newspaper wrote.

"He was honking his horn and waving his hands up" before driving into the officers, Doug Acton, who saw the incident, told the Post. “He gunned it straight at them."

"We do not believe this is an intentional act, and we have no reason to believe it is related to the protests," DPD Commander Matt Murray told KKTV.

A sophomore student involved in the protest, Amarae Moland, told The Associated Press that students were grateful to the police officers. “A lot of the students felt bad," she said. "We were running through the streets, and the cops were just there to help and ended up getting hurt."
