The Obamacare signup deadline has been extended from Thursday to Monday in an attempt to get more registered for health care coverage that will start Jan. 1.

Obamacare, officially known as the Affordable Care Act, will have enrollment in its insurance marketplace open through Monday despite talk of repealing the law when president-elect Donald Trump takes office next month.

Officials with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said about 4 million people had picked health care plans by the beginning of the week, but the Obama administration had predicted that more than 11 million could be covered by ACA plans in 2017, The Washington Post reported.

"Nearly a million consumers have left their contact information to hold their place in line," Healthcare.gov chief executive officer Kevin Counihan said in a statement late Thursday, according to USA Today.

"Our goal is to provide affordable coverage to everyone seeking it before the deadline, and these two additional business days will give consumers an opportunity to come back and complete their enrollment for Jan. 1 coverage," Counihan continued.

The Obama administration does not plan to offer a special tax season grace period to enroll in coverage after Jan. 31 as in past years, CNBC reported. The grace period was established in 2015 during the last tax filing season after some learned how much their penalty would be for not having health insurance in 2014, CNBC noted.

The Kaiser Family Foundation said in a report Wednesday that a household without insurance will pay an average fine of $969 in 2016, up from an estimated $661 per household in 2015, CNBC reported.

CNBC added that about one million of the new Affordable Care Act enrollees are newcomers to HealthCare.gov, which serves 38 states not operating their own Obamacare marketplaces.
