Obama Visits 49th State During Presidency, Only South Dakota Remains

When President Barack Obama landed in Utah on Thursday, it became the 49th state to get a presidential visit from Obama, leaving just South Dakota to round out the list.

Since January, Obama has visited 10 Republican states: Arizona, Tennessee, Idaho, Kansas, Indiana, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky and Utah. In addition, he’s been to nine states that voted for him, and not Mitt Romney.

''There are really important, substantive reasons that explain the places we go," White House spokesman Eric Schultz told The Associated Press when asked about whether the visits to Republican states had been intentional.

Obama was in Utah to visit the Hill Air Force Base and talk about training military veterans to install solar panels.

The White House Historical Association told the AP that if Obama gets to South Dakota in the remaining 21 moths of his term, he will be the fourth president to go to all 50 states. Richard Nixon, George H.W. Bush, and Bill Clinton were the others. Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush were close, lacking four states and one state, respectively.

Despite Schultz’s contention that visits to Red states have been purposeful, an editorial in the Wall Street Journal says it has been a new pattern for Obama.

“This red-tinged travel itinerary represents a deliberate shift in strategy, as the White House has tried to make the case that many of Mr. Obama’s proposals have bipartisan appeal,” wrote Colleen McCain Nelson. “The goal, a senior administration official said, is to step away from the partisan prism of Washington and show that the president’s policies have support in both red and blue states.”

Nelson gave two trips as examples, one to Tennessee to talk about free community college tuition and another to Alabama, to talk about payday lenders and new regs.
