Obama Net Neutrality News – He's for It – Roils Online World

Net neutrality news exploded on Monday after President Obama lent the full weight of the executive branch to a pro-net neutrality position that would reclassify access to the Internet as a utility.

"Net neutrality has been built into the fabric of the Internet since its creation – but it is also a principle that we cannot take for granted," Obama said in a prepared statement. "We cannot allow Internet service providers to restrict the best access or to pick winners and losers in the online marketplace for services and ideas."

Specifically, Obama called on the Federal Communications Commission to use Title II of the 1996 Telecommunications Act to declare ISPs a monopoly like water and electric utilities.

ISPs are staunchly opposed to such a move, and say it would kill innovation and the development of technologies that will lead to faster broadband speeds.

On the other side of the fight are big bandwidth hogs like Netflix, Google, and Facebook, who don't want ISPs to charge them based on how much bandwidth they use in delivering content to their customers.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz responded to Obama's call for net neutrality by comparing it to his failed healthcare initiative, which remains deeply unpopular among the electorate.

Senator John Thune, a Republican expected to lead the Senate Commerce Committee, also hit back at the president's pronouncement.

"The president’s call ... would turn the Internet into a government-regulated utility and stifle our nation's dynamic and robust Internet sector with rules written nearly 80 years ago for plain old telephone service," he said, according to Reuters.
