Oak Lawn Car Crash Kills Man, 2 Nuns; 23 Hurt in Illinois Wreck

A Sunday car crash in Oak Lawn, Illinois, killed the 81-year-old driver and two nuns who were in his car, and injured at least 23 people, two critically.

Edward L. Carthans, 81, from Chicago, ran a red light and caused a crash that involved 10 cars stopped at the light, My Fox LA reported. Also killed in Carthans’ car were Sister Jean Stickney, 86, and Sister Kab Kyoung Kim, 48.

Emergency services treated 23 people at the scene, 11 of whom were taken to area medical centers, and two were in critical condition Monday, My Fox LA said.

A man told police he had seen Carthans slumped over his wheel minutes before the crash, but when he approached Carthans, the elderly man said he was fine and drove on, Chicago’s ABC 7 said.

Carthans then apparently hit three vehicles at a different intersection and was fleeing that accident scene when the second one occurred, ABC 7 said.

Oak Lawn Fire Chief George Sheets told the Chicago Tribune that victims were found "in and around and under cars" like a “stage of a movie set because it was such a violent crash.”

“A lot of us here are seasoned veterans,” Sheets said at a news conference Monday morning. “This is the most violent and bizarre incident we have seen in our 30-plus-year careers."

Speed appears to have been a factor in the accident, and an eyewitness told Fox LA that the truck was “flying westbound.” Another man, who was injured in the accident, told the station, “All of a sudden, we heard, ‘Boom, boom, boom.' I didn't know where it was coming from,” he said. “Then I see all the cars in front of us being pushed back to us. All of a sudden, the truck just dropped down. It crushed the car in front of me, then it landed on our car. It scared the (expletive) out of us.”

Video 11 reported that Carthans may have been traveling 100 miles per hour.
