An NYPD officer was brazenly shot in the head and killed while sitting with her partner in a police command post vehicle in New York City’s Bronx section early Wednesday morning.

Police confirmed the death of the 12-year veteran Miosotis Familia, saying the 48-year-old officer was shot in an unprovoked attack while she and her partner sat in vehicle.

NYPD Police Commissioner O'Neill said Familia was assigned to the 46 Precinct with a police partner when the incident occurred.

"The suspect fired through the vehicle's window, striking her in the head," he said. "Her partner immediately radioed for assistance."

O'Neill said an anti-crime team consisting of a sergeant and another officer encountered a male suspect running along Morris Avenue, approximately one block from scene of the shooting.

After confronting the suspect, he reportedly drew a revolver. Police officers responded by opening fire and killing the suspect and recovering the firearm.

The suspect was later identified as 34-year-old Alexander Bonds, reported CNN.

Another person was injured in the shootout. O'Neill said that the person, believed to be a bystander, had sustained injury but was in a stable condition.

Investigations are underway and a motive for the shooting had not been established.

Commenting on the incident, Mayor de Blasio said this was a painful reality to face following Independence Day celebrations.

"She was on duty, serving the city, protecting again evil, doing what she believed in- doing the job she loved," he remarked.

The NYPD urged members of the public to keep Familia's family in their thoughts.

"As we mourn the death of our officer, join us in sending her family and loved ones prayers and support."
