NYPD Officer Indicted in Stairwell Shooting of Akai Gurley: Reports

By    |   Tuesday, 10 Feb 2015 06:55 PM

NYPD officer Peter Liang has been indicted by a grand jury for the November killing of an unarmed man in a Brooklyn stairwell, according to reports.

The New York Post said Liang faces second-degree manslaughter and other charges in the death of Akai Gurley, 28. Other news media outlets were not naming the charges Tuesday afternoon..

Liang has said that he had his gun in his hand and it accidentally went off, the Post said.

"It has been reported that a Brooklyn grand jury has acted in this case. No matter the specific charges, this case is an unspeakable tragedy for the Gurley family. We urge everyone to respect the judicial process as it unfolds," New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement.

WABC said Liang will turn himself in Wednesday for an arraignment where the charges will be read.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton has said the shooting was an “accident” and that Gurley was a “total innocent,” the Post reported in December.

“Akai was murdered,” BK Nation founder Kevin Powell, who spoke for Gurley’s mother and stepfather, Sylvia and Kenneth Palmer, told the Post. “Akai was killed and it’s called racial profiling.”

“This one — I believe — if we don’t get justice on this one it’s going to be an explosion. This one is a no-brainer,” the Post quoted New York Assemblyman-elect Charles Barron. “The guy shot and discharged his weapon on purpose and Bill de Blasio and Commissioner Bratton should stop calling it an accident before there’s a thorough investigation.”

Gurley’s family said in a statement that the arraignment “is the first step in getting justice for the reckless shooting and wrongful death of Akai Gurley,” CBS New York said.
