NYPD Officer's Dance Break With Pride Parade Attendee Goes Viral

An NYPD officer danced with a parade attendee at the annual New York City Pride Parade on Sunday and proved that he could dust off his moves in a good-humored gesture while on duty during the festivities.

The officer, whose identity is still unknown, was initially stoic alongside his fellow officers as he monitored the parade and watched the celebrators dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop 'Til You Get Enough,” according to NBC New York.

But a cellphone video captured by Paige Ponzeka and later uploaded to YouTube, shows how the music, dancing, and cheer eventually coerced the officer into joining in the fun for a brief 12 seconds.

Ponzeka, a member of the LGBT sports group Big Apple Softball League, told BuzzFeed News that she and her fellow players were marching in the parade through Lower Manhattan when dancer Aaron Santis, wearing the purple shirt in the video, decided to try and encourage the nearby officers on duty to join in the fun.

“The cop was standing there all stoic,” Ponzeka told BuzzFeed. “As soon as Aaron started dancing with him, grinding up against him, the cop tried to stay still but then he just got super into it.”

Santis told BuzzFeed that he had tried, but failed, to persuade any officers to dance with him until this unknown cop began laughing and humored him by busting out his dance groove.

“I didn’t expect him to get into it as much as he did,” Santis said. “The crowd just loved it and I think it made him want to dance more . . . It was such a fun moment. He was such a good sport and I’m so glad he decided to dance.”

After his impromptu dance, the officer continued smiling as Santis planted a sticker saying “I’d Hit That!” on his uniform before kissing him on the cheek and letting him return to his official duties, according to the Daily Mail.

This year's Pride Parade was especially meaningful to the attendees in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision to legalize gay marriage in all 50 states on Friday.
