The search for two New York prison escapees spread to Philadelphia and a cabbie there was being questioned after saying he picked up two men matching their descriptions and took them to a train station.

The cab driver said he picked up the two who may have been Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, at Broad and Vine streets shortly after 4 a.m. on Thursday and dropped them off at the 30th Street Station, reported WCAU-TV.

The television station said authorities were reviewing surveillance video to confirm the cab driver's story while they continue to question him. However, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey told WCAU-TV there is no reason to believe Matt and Sweat are in Philadelphia at this time.

While the Philadelphia tip was being investigated, New York authorities continued their massive manhunt in a rural area outside of Plattsburg, reported the New York Daily News.

Authorities believe bloodhounds have picked up the escapees' scent and may have found a place where the two men may have slept. Police closed numerous roads east of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, in connection with their search.

A helicopter also hovered over a heavily wooded area walking distance from the Dannemora prison where the men escaped earlier this week. The prison is about 25 miles from Canada.

CNN reported that Vermont state police were cooperating with the investigation by checking nearby campgrounds and running patrols around Lake Champlain.

"We have information that would suggest that Vermont was discussed as a possible location," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a Wednesday news conference. "If they are headed toward Vermont ...Vermont is engaged and Vermont is mobilized and we are working hand in glove, and we will be coordinating several times a day to make sure every lead we have, every piece of information is shared."

Matt and Sweat were discovered missing on Saturday, noted CNN. Most escapees in New York have been captured within 24 hours, according to state statistics. State officials told CNN that only one of the 29 inmates who escaped from 2002 to 2013 was free for more than two days.
