Notre Dame Suspends 5 Players Following an 'Honesty' Ruling

By    |   Friday, 10 Oct 2014 08:18 AM

Five suspended Notre Dame players may not play the rest of the season as part of a ruling handed down by the university's "honesty" committee investigating academic fraud, an unnamed source told the Chicago Tribune.

The players – cornerback KeiVarae Russell, linebacker Kendall Moore, defensive end Ishaq Williams, receiver DaVaris Daniels and safety Eilar Hardy – have not played this season while they have been under investigation, the Tribune reported.

The newspaper said its sources were not clear if any of the players knew the results of their hearings. Former Chicago Bears star Phillip Daniels, father of DaVaris Daniels, said on Twitter he was upset about all the leaks about the investigation and he and his son had not learned anything about his playing future at Notre Dame.

J.J. Stankevitz, of the Notre Dame Insider, told Comcast SportsNet Chicago that the university confirmed that all five players are still enrolled in Notre Dame and may be going through the appeals process.

"I don't have a specific verdict or announcement," said coach Brian Kelly. "I'm hearing some things but I'm going to let them share any information they have with you. But as it stands right now I do not have those players back at practice."

Kelly said at a press conference Tuesday that he has been in contact with all of the players but that was about the extent of his knowledge, according to the South Bend Tribune.

"It's awkward, and I'm trying to do the best job I can," Kelly said at the news conference. "I respect the fact that questions are asked, and I don't blame you for it. I just don't believe it's my place to interfere with the individual student if they have, in fact, been told what their fate is and haven't told me, that I'm getting involved in kind of surmising what might have happened, because they're not at practice."
