Plans for a Norway ship tunnel more than a mile long that will allow ships to travel through part of a peninsula and avoid a dangerous part of the sea were announced Wednesday.

The Stad Ship Tunnel will be large enough for cruise and freight ships up to 16,000 tons, 118 feet wide and 162 feet tall, according to NBC News. The cost for the tunnel is estimated to be at least $314 million.

The ship tunnel will be the first of its kind in the world, and will allow ships to travel through part of the Stadlandet peninsula.

Construction is expected to begin in 2019 and be completed in 2023, according to Time.

Engineers are expected to remove 8 million tons of rock to construct the tunnel, project manager Terje Andreassen told NBC.

Not only will the tunnel save time by allowing ships to cut through the peninsula rather than go around it, the Stadhavet Sea is often stormy and treacherous.

“The combination of wind, currents and waves around this part of the coastline make this section a particularly demanding part of the Norwegian coast,” the Norwegian Coast Administration said, CNN reported.

It is expected that about five ships per hour will be able to pass through the tunnel, and traffic lights will let ships know when it is safe to pass, CNN reported.

Norway's tunnel is expected to increase ship traffic through the area because ships won’t have to wait for storms to pass.
