A Northwestern University rower drowned in a canal Monday morning after falling overboard during practice.

Mohammed Ramzan, 19, was with the rest of the university's club crew members on the North Shore Channel in Lincolnwood, Illinois, a drainage canal that runs from Wilmette to Chicago, when the incident happened.

WGN-TV reported a fellow teammate and a coach following behind the rowers on a motorboat jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue Ramzan when he fell into the water.

Ramzan fell into the water about 7:35 a.m, but by 2 p.m., the search turned from a rescue to a recovery mission, Skokie Fire Chief Jim Walters said, the Chicago Tribune reported.

"Lack of information has been our biggest problem," Walters said at the time, stated the Tribune. "We haven't gotten a solid definition of where they went into the water, so we're working kind of blind that way. We're doing the best we can, but that makes the area that much bigger that we have to cover."

Authorities notified the university Monday night that they had recovered Ramzan's body from the channel.

Ramzan, from Auburn, Washington, was a first year student at Northwestern.

About 50 emergency responders took part in rescue and recovery efforts, but WGN-TV reported their efforts were hampered by the swiftly moving current.

"We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to Mohammed's family and friends for this tragic loss," Patricia Telles-Irvin, Northwestern's vice president for student affairs, said in a university statement.

"The loss affects us all, and we urge all members of our community to reach out and support one another. We are grateful to Northwestern University Police, Illinois State Police and all the law enforcement agencies and fire departments involved in the search," the statement continued.

Telles-Irvin urged members of the university community to take advantage of its counseling and psychological services or the chaplain’s office.
