New York Jets center Nick Mangold wore a NYPD hat during Sunday's game against the New England Patriots in honor of New York City police officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu who were shot and killed in Brooklyn on Saturday.

Mangold wore the hat when the teams entered MetLife Stadium and on the sideline during the game, according to the New York Daily News. The Jets' longtime center was injured in the second quarter of the game.

"We go out here and we play a sport," said Mangold. "We don't know whether or not it's going to be our last play. But when you magnify that and don't know whether it's going to be your last day on Earth, I can't even imagine what they go through. I've always been a big fan."

Mangold said wearing the hat was a small gesture to recognize the sacrifices the officers and other on the police force make every day.

"Every one of those guys that's out there, they risk their lives every day," said Mangold. "They go out there to keep the community safe and for that to happen to those two guys, their families, that's a raw deal. If wearing that (cap) gives them a little bit of comfort or shows support for those folks, I'm happy to do it."

New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin honored the officers as well, wearing a black stripe and a peace sign under in Giants insignia, reported Fox News.

"We wore this (black stripe) because the New York Giants wanted to honor and mourn the assassination of the two New York City policemen that took place last night in our city," Coughlin said after the Giants win over the St. Louis Rams, according to the New York Post. "We also wanted to wear this pin to represent peace. Let's hope that the voice of reason can prevail. Violence never solves anything. I realize there are issues, but solve them with nonviolent means."
