Nicolas Cruz, 31, was headed south on a county road and his wife, Kirstina Munoz, was headed north when their two cars collided, the Wichita Times Record News said. An official said he believed neither one was wearing a seatbelt. It took special equipment to extricate them from their vehicles.

Trooper Jymie Ha told the Record News that speed may have been an issue in the crash, which is still under investigation.

Witnesses reported there were no skid marks on the road around the accident, which is about 3.5 miles west of Odell, Texas, the Record News said.

The crash occurred near the Marhard Pullet Farm, where they both worked, the News Record said. The couple had three young children.
