New York Coyotes on the Rise; Police Capture Downtown Dog

By    |   Monday, 27 Apr 2015 08:03 AM

New York police caught another coyote over the weekend — this time in Battery Park City — and conservationists say it’s a good sign that their populations are on the rise.

"The idea of an expanding coyote population is a story that is nationwide," Mark Weckel, co-founder of the Gotham Coyote Project, told the New York Daily News.

So far this year, coyotes have been spotted on Riverside Drive, in a Chelsea courtyard, and in the Financial District, and those sightings are likely to increase.

"Local extinction of the eastern wolf and puma opened up a niche for coyotes," Weckel explained. "Once they got here, they adapted. That’s the secret to their success."

Weckel, a Brooklyn-born conservation scientist at the American Museum of Natural History, said that at least four breeding pairs of coyotes have set up dens in the Bronx, and that some of the recently spotted coyotes are likely to have been newly fledged pups looking to set up a den of their own.

Many people who've spotted a coyote have done the right thing in calling police or animal control right away, but some have tried to feed or pet them — a bad move for humans, as well as the animal.

"Keeping them wild is the best way to keep them safe and ourselves safe," explained Sarah Aucoin, the director of the Urban Park Rangers.

When authorizes received calls from concerned citizens on Saturday morning, they immediately mobilized to tranquilize and remove the coyote to more wild environs.
