A New Jersey marina was recently overcome by hundreds of thousands of dead fish.

"It looked like ice when we first pulled up," boater Art Lynch told CBS New York. "We didn’t know what it was."

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection officials told the station that the 3- to 4-inch fish known as the peanut bunker were likely chased into a Keansburg marina off Laurel Avenue by blue fish or skates in Raritan Bay and died of low oxygen levels.

The dead fish surrounded boats and gave off a revolting smell.

"It’s bad, it’s enough to gag you," one resident told CBS New York. "It smells like a sewer plant backed up and let out in the water."

The fish kill was likely caused by low levels of oxygen in the water, the result of warm, still water and growing plant life, NBC New York reported.

"This is primarily a natural phenomenon, but it is exacerbated by polluted runoff, including fertilizers from lawns, which is why preserving stream corridors and buffers is important," Greg Remaud, the deputy director of NY/NJ Baykeeper, told the station.

Public works crews in Keansburg have been working to clean up the fish that have washed up on shore, using a beach rake attached to a front-end loader, NJ.com reported. The dead fish will be buried at the Monmouth County landfill. Those in the water will be left to wash out with the tide.

The fish kill was the second in about a week's time and is a fairly common occurrence, although this was much larger than most.

"If you want to live next to the water, this is something you have to live with," James Dow, who has lived in the area for 64 years, told NJ.com.

The fish kill poses no public health risk, according to officials.
