The "Never Trump" campaign came to an end Monday in a convention uproar on the floor of Quicken Loans Arena during the first day of the Republican National Convention as party leaders put down an effort to force a roll call vote on convention rules.

USA Today reported that the roll call vote on the rules could have led to a change allowing delegates to "vote their conscience" instead of voting in accordance with the voters they represent. "Never Trump" supporters chanted "roll call vote" and "point of order" on the floor as they tried to force a vote.

A group of anti-Trump activists had been trying to figure out a way to deny the presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump from officially receiving the nomination after he won the number of delegates needed during the primary process.

Presiding chairman, Arkansas U.S. Rep. Steve Womack, twice ruled that more candidates on the floor favored the existing rules after voice votes were factored in. That prompted the Colorado delegation to walk off the floor in protest, according to ABC News.

Former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli walked out as well, noted USA Today.

The controversial voice vote came after Republican National Committee officials and Trump aides worked behind the scenes to deny a written request to call for a roll call vote, according to Time magazine.

The majority of delegates from nine delegations submitted the required signatures for the vote, but two hours of lobbying to get petitioners to withdraw their signatures changed the outcome, wrote Time.

Enough minds were changed in three delegations, leaving just six delegations with enough required signatures, leaving the written request for the roll call vote to be ruled out of order by Womack.

ABC News wrote, though, that even if the roll call vote measure would have passed the "Never Trump" activists still would have had a difficult road to climb toward unbinding pledge delegates.

The delegates would have had to vote down the entire rules package that was already approved by a rules committee earlier in the day. Then, it would have been sent back to the rules committee for additional consideration.
