Nehemiah Blessed Fischer: Pastor Shot Dead by Cops After Charging Officer

By    |   Wednesday, 03 Jun 2015 09:07 AM

Oklahoma pastor Nehemiah Blessed Fischer was shot dead by state troopers on Friday, and dash cam footage released by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol on Monday now helps clarify what went wrong during what should have been a flood rescue.

According to ABC News, it was late Friday night in Okmulgee when troopers Michael Taylor and Mark Southall approached Fischer and his brother, Brandon Fischer, who were trying to get Brandon's truck dislodged from a flooded ditch.

The two patrolmen responded to an incoming call reporting the situation, perhaps from a passerby. When the patrolmen arrived, they shouted for the Fischer brothers to leave the truck behind and evacuate the flooded area.

Before the footage was released, Oklahoma Highway Patrol Capt. Paul Timmons told CNN on Sunday that, "As they were exiting the water, coming towards the troopers, a confrontation occurred and one of the troopers was actually assaulted. And in defense of himself, he fired."

The Fischer family was skeptical, however, and suspected foul play on the part of the patrolmen.

"They would not have gone after the trooper . . . they would not do that on their own volition," Nehemiah' wife, Laura, told FOX23 local news, The Guardian U.K. reported.

"Neither of them would ever attack or hurt anyone. The cops are covering up evil, and they will be found out," cousin Anthony Fischer wrote to The Washington Post on Sunday.

The following day, Monday, the highway patrol released a 40-second clip from a longer, 30-minute taping of the encounter.

The clip shows the 35-year-old Nehemiah Blessed Fischer charge one of the officers after they've identified themselves as law enforcement.

"Nehemiah attacks a trooper, hits him head on with both hands like he's an offensive linemen, he hits him, drives him to the ground, gets on top of him and tries to drown him," said OHP legal counsel Gary James.

"His brother Brandon has admitted that they were taking shots of Crown Royal up unto the time the vehicle is being flooded," he added.

Brandon has been charged with assaulting an officer and public intoxication, and is expected to be back in court later this month.

Both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave.
