The search for a legendary Nazi gold train resumed Tuesday in Poland, where explorers began digging above the spot they think the train might be buried.

Explorers Andreas Richter of Germany and Piotr Koper of Poland claimed last year to have pinpointed the train beneath the city of Walbrzych, The Associated Press reported.

Geological experts using magnetic equipment failed to find evidence of a train, but that hasn't dissuaded the explorers, who said six independent companies have detected the shape of a tunnel underground.

"The results of the ground-penetrating radar examinations are very promising," search team spokesman Andrzej Gaik said, according to the AP. "It's so exciting and we count on success."

The legendary train carrying riches is said to have disappeared in a mountain tunnel at the end of World War II.

The privately funded search involves a team of 33 researchers, The Washington Post reported. The search was expected to be streamed live and could be completed in two to 10 days.

Rumors about the train have persisted since the 1940s, but experts say there is no evidence that such a train exists.

"If we find a tunnel, then that is also a success," Gaik said, according to the Post. "Maybe the train is hidden inside that tunnel."

The Mirror posted drone footage online of the excavation's start.

The site has been blocked off to keep the public away, The Daily Mail reported.

The site is near a network of secret underground tunnels built for the Nazis by prisoners of war, The Daily Mail said.
