Nashville Man's Storm Drain Rescue Puzzles Locals; He Was There for 4 Days

A Nashville man was rescued from a storm drain on Sunday after being trapped there for four days, and now investigators are trying to figure out why he was there in the first place.

According to ABC affiliate WKRN-TV, the 53-year-old man was crying for help for many days while wedged into a pipe roughly 14-inches in diameter. He had crawled into the pipe on Thursday, and soon became stuck at a bend.

Brian Williams, a local man who was on his way to a swim meet, heard the man's cries just after noon.

"He was yelling, 'Help! Help!' sort of repeatedly," said Williams.

"We used our flashlights from our cellphones and we could see him, but he was back in the pipeline a good ways, probably about 10 feet," he continued. "He said, 'Praise God. Thank you. I have been down here forever.' And he was just very happy at that point."

Williams contacted local authorities, and firefighters rushed to the scene. Over the course of two hours, they had to dig and smash their way through several feet of ground to get to the man, who was found dehydrated, and with minor scrapes and bruises.

"We went down through about two and a half, three feet of earth with gravel mixed in it," Nashville District Fire Chief Ardrel Sawyers told CBS affiliate WTVF-TV. "[Firefighters] had to physically, with a sledge hammer, bust open about a five foot section of drain pipe to get him out."

"If we had some rain, you know obviously he was in a storm drain, so it could have ended very badly for him. I think he had a guardian angel overlooking him and he was able to get out of there alive," said Williams.

After he was examined and cleared by hospital workers, the man, who is homeless, told firefighters he was went into the drain because he was feeling adventurous, but later said he was chased into the drain by somebody.
