NASA's big alien scoop heralded online by the hacking group Anonymous turned out to be a big letdown instead after the space agency’s science chief debunked the rumor that life had been found beyond Earth.

Anonymous had claimed in a YouTube viral video last week that NASA was about to make an announcement about alien life, reported Space.com.

Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate, took to Twitter on Monday to push back against the Anonymous's video, which had garnered more than 1.8 million views on YouTube.

Popular Science’s Sarah Fecht said the claims made by Anonymous seemed to be based on sloppy research by the hackers.

"The video is mainly based on NASA quotes taken out of context, and what appear to be videos and information from conspiracy theory websites," said Fecht. "The crux of the argument is based on something Thomas Zurbuchen ... said during a hearing in April. These sorts of hearings are organized to educate the House Science Committee on the latest research in a particular field of study."

Zurbuchen had said that NASA was "on the verge of making one of the most profound, unprecedented, discoveries in history," referring to the space agency's various missions and not the discovery of alien life.

"While we're excited about the latest findings from NASA's Kepler space observatory, there's no pending announcement regarding extraterrestrial life," Zurbuchen told Popular Science. "For years NASA has expressed interest in searching for signs of life beyond Earth.

"We have a number of science missions that are moving forward with the goal of seeking signs of past and present life on Mars and ocean worlds in the outer solar system. While we do not yet have answers, we will continue to work to address the fundamental question, 'are we alone?'"
