A group of Muslim migrants traveling by boat from Africa to Italy has been accused of throwing 12 Christians overboard during the trip and, in a separate incident, it's believed that 40 people drowned when another migrant vessel sank between Libya and Italy.

Italian police took 15 Muslim migrants into custody Wednesday after learning that they allegedly singled out 12 Christians and threw them overboard because of their faith, BBC News reported. The victims, thought to be from Ghana and Nigeria, are presumed dead.

The remaining Christians on the rubber raft managed to stay aboard by forming a "human chain" to resist the assault, police said, according to CNN.

Nearly 10,000 migrants have tried to cross the Mediterranean in recent days and needed rescue, and now Italian authorities have asked the European Union for assistance in handling the crisis.

More than 500 people, mostly from Africa and the Middle East, have died in the dangerous effort to cross the sea, BBC News noted. This week, more than 40 drowned when their ship sank mid-journey.

National Public Radio's Ofeibea Quist-Arcton reported that the spike in African migrants — along with those from Iraq and Syria who are fleeing their homelands for Europe — is caused by several factors.

Many of the migrants "are facing conflict, repression, and persecution, but also many others who are fleeing poverty, looking for a better life in Europe," according to NPR.

Some families sell their entire livelihoods to get not only themselves but also other family members onto European-bound makeshift boats and rafts.

"We're talking thousands of dollars," Quist-Arcton told NPR. "For example, a family in Niger — for them, their wealth is cattle, so they sell their cattle to be able to send someone to Europe. Or in Senegal, somebody who may be running a small business — they sell it so that they can send one of the family members to Europe in search of a better life, and we're not talking about small families — extended families."
