Mom Wants to Die: Ill Single Mother Fights for Right to End Her Life

A 46-year-old single mom in southern California is fighting for the right to die in a case that mirrors that of Brittany Maynard, the woman who moved to Oregon last year to end her life after urging the state pass an assisted-suicide law.

Christy O'Donnell, a former Los Angeles Police Department sergeant and a civil rights attorney who has terminal brain and lung cancer, filed a lawsuit with two others on Friday in California Superior Court in San Diego County for the right to purchase medication to die "painlessly and peacefully," KTLA-TV reported.

The television stationed stated that O'Donnell is the lead plaintiff suing the state of California for the right to have medical aid in dying. According to a March Los Angeles Times article, O'Donnell testified in front of the state Senate's health committee, which voted 5-2 to pass an assisted-suicide bill.

Some doctors and others, like Janet Morana, executive director of the group Priests for Life, have argued against the spread of assisted suicides.

While the bill is making its way through the California legislature, physician Lynette Cederquist said in a statement on the Compassion and Choices website, which advocates for assisted suicides, that the bill will be passed soon enough for O'Donnell.

"The situation is urgent for terminally ill Californians like Christy because they cannot afford to wait for relief from unbearable suffering in their last days," Cederquist said in the advocacy group's statement.

O'Donnell said in her March testimony that she wanted to die with her daughter holding her hand at a time she determined.

"When I pass, I do not want her to watch me in pain," O'Donnell said at the hearing, according to the Times.

In a People magazine interview posted Monday, O'Donnell said that is what will happen if she is not allowed medication that would give her a chance to die peacefully.

"I am dying within the next months, and I am going to die painfully," she said. "I am asking the courts for intervention to issue an order so that a doctor can legally prescribe a medication so that I don't have to die painfully, and so that every moment before I die, I don't have to spend afraid and worried about the painful manner in which I'm going to die."
