U.S. Olympic runner Molly Huddle celebrated too early during the final stretch of the women's 10,000 meters during the World Championships on Monday, which allowed teammate Emily Infeld to overtake her in a stunning photo finish.

According to The Indianapolis Star, the Notre Dame graduate said the outcome was "painful," but congratulated her teammate on winning the bronze medal that could have been hers.

"I thought one of the Ethiopians was to my right, and I looked, and she wasn't," Huddle, 30, said in an interview with Universal Sports. "And I just … Emily slipped on the inside as I eased up a bit. She got this once-in-a-lifetime moment. I feel like it kind of slipped through my fingers, so it's frustrating."

In the video of the race, widely shared on Twitter, Huddle can be seen raising her arms in celebration right before she crosses the finish line, allowing Infeld to slip past her. Infeld's time was 31:43.49, just a split-second shorter than Huddle's 31:43.58.

Kenya's Vivian Cheruiyot and Ethiopia's Gelete Burka took the gold and silver medals, respectively, during the race in Beijing.

Huddle took the lead for the majority of the race, breaking out before the 9,000-meter mark and holding it until the final lap.

"When the bell rang, I thought, 'Anybody could take this,'" she said. "It wasn't me today."

With a fourth-place finish, Huddle continues to step up her game. She finished 11th in the 5,000 meters at the 2012 Olympics and sixth at the 2013 World Championships. She is currently looking forward to the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
