"Missing Lester" became a popular Twitter theme during Monday night's presidential debate as Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton squabbled, oftentimes speaking over or interrupting moderator Lester Holt.

Both Trump and Clinton regularly barreled right through the NBC anchor's attempts to shift gears, change topics, or set the pace, leaving many to question whether Holt was there at all.

The New Yorker parodied Holt's moderating in a piece titled "CNN Launches Manhunt After Lester Holt Vanishes From Debate"

"CNN launched an urgent manhunt Monday after Lester Holt, the moderator of the first Presidential debate of the 2016 general election, mysteriously vanished two minutes into the contest," the piece reads.

Twitter users hammered Holt as well.

Holt scored some points by fact checking on the fly, as he cornered Trump on his Iraq War position and on the issue of President Barack Obama's birth certificate.

The moderator did take some heat from Trump on Tuesday for the nature of his questions, or lack thereof, to Clinton.

"Well, he didn't ask her about the emails at all," the GOP nominee said on "Fox and Friends." "He didn't ask her about her scandals. He didn't ask her about the Benghazi deal that she destroyed. He didn't ask her about a lot of things she should have been asked about. There's no question about it. He didn't ask about her foundation."
