Minivan Dragged 16 Miles After Getting Caught Under Back of Semi

A family traveling in white-out conditions in Michigan rear-ended a semi-truck Wednesday, and the unaware truck driver dragged their van for 16 miles before police stopped him.

Pamela and Matthew Menz were driving north on Interstate 75 when they rear-ended a semi-truck that Matthew Menz told a dispatcher was going "about 2 miles an hour" without hazards, CNN said. Their 2001 Toyota Sienna got jammed in the truck’s undercarriage.

"The truck driver had no idea they were back there," Roscommon County Undersheriff Ed Stern told CNN.

The crash shut down power in the Menzes' van, which cut off the heater as well as the horn, and also shattered the windshield, CNN said.

Because of the weather and their broken windshield, the family couldn’t tell the 911 dispatcher exactly where they were on the highway, although Matthew Menz said on the 911 tape, "We shouldn’t be hard to find."

He also expressed concern that the car would break lose and, since he didn’t have any power, he wouldn’t be able to control it.

"I don’t have any control of this thing, so wherever your officers are, I’d appreciate that they get in front of him and stop him," Matthew Menz, who sounded remarkably calm about the situation, said on the call.

Michigan Live posted excerpts from the call on its website.

CNN reported that the couple's son, Justin Menz, had minor injuries from when the accident occurred, although all four were transported to the hospital as a precaution.

The unusual situation drew numerous comments online.
