Actress Mindy Kaling’s brother pretended to be black to get accepted to medical school, and he’s written a book about what he called an accidental “twisted social experiment.”

Vijay Chokal-Ingram said on his website that he didn’t have the grades or scores to get into medical school, so he took drastic steps to make use of affirmative action.

“I knew that admission standards for certain minorities under affirmative action were, let’s say ... less stringent?” Chokal-Ingram, whose parents were from Nigeria, wrote. “So, I shaved my head, trimmed my long Indian eyelashes, and applied to medical school as a black man. My change in appearance was so startling that my own fraternity brothers didn’t recognize me at first. ”

Calling himself JoJo, Chokal-Ingram was accepted to medical school at the St. Louis University School of Medicine, which he attended for two years before realizing he didn’t have the grades or the interest in becoming a doctor. He later received his MBA from UCLA.

Chokal-Ingram, who has no contact with his sister, Kaling’s spokesperson told the New York Daily News, has now penned a story about his experience, “Almost Black: The True Story of an Indian American Who Got Into Medical School Posing As An African American.”

Aside from speaking out against affirmative action, Chokal-Ingram said on his website that he realized during his experience pretending to be black just how challenging racial issues can be.

“Not everything worked out as planned. Cops harassed me. Store clerks accused me of shoplifting,” Chokal-Ingram wrote. “Women were either scared of me or couldn’t keep their hands off me. What started as a devious ploy to gain admission to medical school turned into twisted social experiment. I was a hard-partying college frat boy who discovered the seriousness and complexity of America’s racial problems while posing as a black man.”

Online, many were vocal about what Chokal-Ingram did:
