Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee won applause from some and rebuke from others with comments he made about transgender people using public bathrooms and showers.

"Now I wish that someone told me that when I was in high school that I could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in P.E.," Huckabee said at the 2015 National Religious Broadcasters Convention, BuzzFeed reported.

"I’m pretty sure that I would have found my feminine side and said, 'Coach, I think I’d rather shower with the girls today.' You’re laughing because it sounds so ridiculous, doesn’t it?"

Huckabee's comments were made in February at the Nashville-based convention, but video of the event was not available until recently.

The comments became all the more relevant this week after Caitlyn Jenner introduced her new, female identity on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine. The cover spread instantly went viral across social media and the mediasphere, and Jenner's new Twitter account broke a Guinness World Record for reaching 1 million followers in just four hours.

Huckabee has long wondered how the conduct of a transgender adult might impact a child, however, and in his speech he talked about another hypothetical situation that could now apply to Jenner.

"[S]imply recognize that the fact that we are now in city after city watching ordinances say that your 7-year-old daughter, if she goes into the restroom cannot be offended and you can’t be offended if she’s greeted there by a 42-year-old man who feels more like a woman than he does a man," the former governor told the crowd.

"There is something inherently wrong about forcing little children to be a part of this social experiment," he added.

It was unclear if Huckabee cited any specific cities or states that have recently changed their ordinances to be more accommodating to transgender people, but most states have long had in place processes and procedures that govern how trans people are classified when it comes to drivers' licenses, housing, health care, and public accommodations.
