Microsoft layoffs in 2017 will include 3,000 employees who are losing their jobs after the company announced intentions to shift it's sales strategies to focus more on cloud services.

The computer giant confirmed the move on Thursday.

“Microsoft is implementing changes to better serve our customers and partners," the company said in a statement obtained by The Washington Post. "We are taking steps to notify some employees that their jobs are under consideration or that their positions will be eliminated. Like all companies, we evaluate our business on a regular basis. This can result in increased investment in some places and, from time-to-time, re-deployment in others.”

Microsoft employs 121,000 around the world, with 71,000 situated in the U.S, noted NBC News.

Many of the job cuts reportedly would affect employees working in sales positions outside the U.S., but the firm's headquarters in Redmond, Washington, would also experience job losses.

The sales teams are experienced in selling desktop packages but chief executive Satya Nadella has been pushing the company's focus to cloud services since he took over in 2014.

He previously announced intentions to cut up to 18, 000 jobs, many of which would employees in the company's smartphone division, said the Post. Then, last July, the firm announced that 2,850 positions would be cut.

The coming layoffs are meant to streamline sales for the company's Azure division, which has shown notable growth in revenue.

Commenting in April, Nadella stated: “Our results this quarter reflect the trust customers are placing in the Microsoft Cloud. From large multi-nationals to small and medium businesses to non-profits all over the world, organizations are using Microsoft’s cloud platforms to power their digital transformation.”
