Microsoft Build Developer Conference Kicks Off: What's Expected?

Tech watchers have been waiting in anticipation to see what will be unveiled at Microsoft Build, the tech giant’s developer conference that kicked off Wednesday in San Francisco.

The first big announcement was that of Microsoft Edge — the official name for the company's Project Spartan web browser set to replace Internet Explorer, Tech Crunch reported.

"This is a really important Build for Microsoft, probably the most important developer conference it has ever done. The company is on the brink of launching a new wave of operating system technologies that will affect almost everything it delivers over the next few years," Al Hilwa, IDC analyst covering enterprise development, told Computerworld.

The company is also expected to pitch its Windows 10 operating system, which will run on computers, tablets, and smartphones.

"Microsoft needs to show how Windows still fits in the overall vision of Microsoft which is increasingly cloud-centric and device agnostic," Steve Kleynhans, vice president for the Gartner IT analyst company, told Computerworld.

The company will also likely provide more information about its emerging HoloLens technology, which will combine virtual 3D objects with the real world, PC Magazine reported.

Details about a new flagship smartphone also may be revealed, as well as information about Office Graph machine-learning technology.

Twitter users followed the keynote address live on Wednesday afternoon.
