Microphone Bomb Explodes, Killing Afghan Governor During Speech

By    |   Tuesday, 15 Oct 2013 05:39 PM

A bomb planted in a microphone exploded Tuesday, killing an Afghan governor as he gave a speech at a mosque. Arsallah Jamal, governor of the Logar province and who was closely allied with President Hamid Karzai, died and at least 15 others were injured when the bomb exploded.

The scene was horrific, with debris from the bomb spread everywhere and blood-spattered walls, said The Associated Press.

No one has stepped forward to claim responsibility for the attack, which is one of a number of assassination attempts in the country, the BBC reported. There had been several attempts made on Jamal’s life in the past.

More than 1,000 Afghanistan leaders in the past decade have been killed, according to the BBC. The Logar area is a particular target because of the ability for the Taliban to start attacks on the capital. Jamal also was planning to develop a large copper mine, which has Chinese investors, and the BBC said that could have made him a target.

Jamal was 47 years old. He was just appointed to the governor post in Logar in April, having served in another province before.

Logar had been a peaceful province, the AP said, until Taliban fighters recently began to move into the area.

Karzai spoke out, calling the attack one that was “against Islam,” The Associated Press said.

“Terrorists and the Taliban working in the name of Islam carry out attacks that result in the killing of innocent Muslims. Surely it is not the act of Muslims, but those who have been hired to kill Muslims,” Karzai told the AP.

While that was all Karzai would say, the AP reported that the president has blamed “foreign interests” previously for attacks against his administration.
