Michelle Obama Senate Run? 2018 California Speculation Stirs

First Lady Michelle Obama may be considering a Senate run in California in 2018, and if she isn't, she should, according to report.

Citing unnamed sources, Orb Magazine speculated that the Obamas were considering moving to California after President Barack Obama's term ends. The website said Michelle Obama is being courted to pursue the seat expected to be vacated by Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who will be 85 years old.

In trying to convince Michelle Obama to run for Senate, Orb said supporters have reminded her of California's solid Democratic leanings, as well as tell her that no one else would have Obama's "stature, broad appeal and fundraising connections."

Feinstein, who has served since 1992, told CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday she hasn't decided whether to seek another term, when asked by Candy Crowley about the Obama speculation.

"I have no idea what I'm going to be doing in 2018," Feinstein said, "That's four years from now, and that's one of the nice things about a six-year term. I've served two years of my term and you know, I'll make a decision in due time. I'm flattered, if that should be true. Somehow I do not believe it is true, but I would be flattered if it were."

Of greater short-term importance to Feinstein was the San Francisco Giants, who are one win from securing their third World Series title in five years.

"Go Giants," Feinstein said.

The Orb story suggested the Obamas are looking at living in Los Angeles, which would fulfill residency requirements for Michelle Obama to run for Senate.

In 1999, former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and her husband Bill Clinton bought a home in Chappaqua, New York, to enable to run — and win— for a Senate seat in 2000.

This isn't be the first time Michelle Obama has been linked to a Senate run. In June, a Reuters column speculated that Obama was considering taking a run at Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk's seat in 2016.
