Michael Sibley Bomb Scare: Man Framed Muslims Because He's a 'Patriot'

Michael Sibley, a Georgia man who was arrested last week for leaving homemade bombs in a park last November, said he put a Quran in the bag with the explosives because he is a "patriot" and wanted people to think a Muslim had done it.

In November, a hiker reportedly found a backpack containing two partially constructed bombs in Georgia's Vickery Creek Park, which is part of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.

According to court documents obtained by Talking Points Memo, Sibley was interviewed by police March 16 and later confessed to the bomb scare on March 20. It's not clear what led police to initially call him in for questioning this month.

The backpack also held a Quran, a copy of the Atlanta Falcons' schedule, public transportation schedules, the locations of Marcus Jewish Centers, a T-shirt with the name "Mina Khodari" on it, and a book titled "The Rape of Kuwait," TPM reported.

Sibley, 67, reportedly told federal agents he wrote the name on the shirt "because it looked foreign," and left the other items so they would look like "soft targets."

"[He] stated he is a 'patriot' and he felt no one was paying attention to what was going on the world. Sibley felt if he placed the package in a Roswell park, then people would finally get that this type of activity could happen anywhere," the court documents stated.

Federal prosecutors charged Sibley with intentionally conveying false information and attempting to damage federal property by use of an explosive device, according to a statement from the justice department.

"This arrest should reassure the community that serious crimes like this will be investigated thoroughly and all leads followed to identify the perpetrator," U. S. attorney John Horn said.
